5 top restaurants for eating vegan in Kyoto

Kyoto is a city that is rich in culture and history, and it’s also home to some amazing vegetarian and vegan food options. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan visiting Japan, you may find it a challenge to find food that meets your dietary restrictions, as many dishes contain hidden animal products like fish stock or bonito flakes. However, with a little bit of effort and knowledge, it is possible to enjoy a delicious, plant-based meal in Kyoto.

  1. Mumokuteki: This restaurant serves healthy, traditional Japanese dishes that are mostly vegetarian, with a few vegan options as well. The atmosphere is great, and the staff are helpful in explaining which dishes are vegetarian or vegan. For dessert, be sure to try the dandelion “coffee,” made from dandelion roots and delicious. Prices for main dishes range from 700-1400 yen.
  2. Ain Soph.Journey: Formerly known as Matsuontoko, this restaurant has recently rebranded as Ain Soph and now serves only vegan dishes. They offer a variety of healthy meals and have an English website with the menu available. Prices for main dishes range from 1300-1500 yen.
  3. Miyakoyasai Kamo: This restaurant offers a buffet of dishes made from local vegetables, making it a sustainable and delicious choice. They are open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and offer a variety of fresh, healthy dishes. However, not all dishes are vegetarian or vegan, so it’s a good idea to bring a Japanese-speaking person or a dining out card like this one: http://justhungry.com/japan-dining-out-cards. Prices for dinner range from 1370-1500 yen.
  4. Veg Out/Tamisa Yoga Cafe: This restaurant offers a mix of dishes ranging from nachos to buddha bowls, all made from locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere is relaxing, and the view of the Kamogawa river is beautiful. Prices for main dishes range from 1000-1200 yen.
