Tips for your first hut to hut hike

Hut-to-hut hiking is a unique and awesome experience that allows you to immerse yourself
in nature while also having the comfort and security of a roof over your head at the end of
the day. Since it can also be quite different from traditional camping and backpacking,
it’s important to be prepared. Here are some essential tips to prepare for your first hut to hut hike:

Pack light: Because you’ll be staying in huts, you won’t need to bring as much gear as you
would for a (wild)camping trip. Focus on the essentials: warm clothing, a good pair of
hiking boots, a sleeping bag, and a small backpack to carry your essentials during the day. Also bring a set of flipflops, slippers or other inside shoes, since most places wont let you wear your outside shoes inside.

Make reservations early: If you’re going for a popular hut-to-hut hiking route, chances are that accomodation fills up quickly. It’s important to make reservations as early as possible. This will ensure that you have a place
to stay each night, since alternative accommodation is probably nowhere to be found!

Be prepared for the weather: Even if the forecast looks good, it’s always a good idea to pack
for the worst-case scenario. Bring warm and waterproof clothing, such as a good rain
jacket and pants. But also a cap to protect yourself from the sun for example!

Be mindful of the environment: Hut-to-hut hiking takes place in some of the most beautiful
and fragile natural areas, it’s important to be mindful of your impact. Follow Leave No
Trace principles, so don’t leave toilet paper (more tips on that later), keep all your trash, and stick to designated trails.

Be flexible: On the trail things can be very unpredictable. Weather, trail conditions, and other factors can change unexpectedly. So it’s important to be flexible and adapt to the situation. Be prepared to change your plans if
necessary and always have a backup plan.

Bring an emergency kit: As said before, hiking can be very unpredictable. Make sure you’re prepared for emergencies by bringing at least enough water, a first-aid kit, an emergency blanket and a headtorch.

Overall, hut-to-hut hiking is a great way to experience the beauty of the great outdoors while
still having the comfort and security of a roof over your head at the end of the day. By
following these essential tips for your first hut to hut hike, you can make the most out of it and create memories that will last a lifetime.
